By Davey D

So everyone is talking about Benghazi as if they actually know where that city is on the map and up til now really didn’t care to know..It sad to see that 4 Americans died and that there were probably some missteps and leading up to their deaths, but lets keep it 100… the US had basically invaded Libya along with NATO at the urging of the global corporate powers who saw Libya as a threat to their economic dominance.. Libya was set to introduce its own World Bank for African nations and its own currency to rival the dollar..This would have in effect ended a lot of the economic repressions African nations were experiencing..

The US upon learning this armed some crazy anti-black Arab rebels who positioned themselves as part of the ‘Arab Spring‘..Folks were enamored and cheered them on even after it was revealed early on that many of those rebels were connected to Al Qaeda.. Thousands of Black Africans who lived in Libya or were migrant workers from other countries were lynched in the streets.. The human rights violations were atrocious.. Read about it HERE .. You can also read about it HERE. There are scores of articles and detailed reports of this ranging from the UK Guardian to Amnesty International.

There were public hangings, Black people rounded up and put in cages like animals in a zoo and made to eat the new Libyan flag.. again I kid you not they were made to eat the new Libyan flag..There are videos on-line showing this.. That was the horror of Benghazi..That’s the horror no one wants to talk about.

Athens has threatened to arrest high school teachers if they carry out a strike this week, in a move seen as reassurance to Greece’s foreign bailout creditors that the country will not abandon its harsh austerity measures and unpopular reforms.

The announcement marks the third time this year that the Greek government has invoked emergency laws to force strikers to return to work.

Greece is due to receive €7.5 billion in loans soon, the latest tranche of a €240-billion rescue package signed in 2010; Athens currently has no money to pay pensions and wages. To cope with the personnel gaps, Athens plans to require two additional hours of work each week from high school teachers, and plans to transfer 4,000 of them to remote regions of the country.

The government broke a longstanding taboo last month by agreeing to dismiss some 15,000 public-sector workers by the end of 2014, a key demand by the EU and International Monetary Fund for Greece to qualify for further rescue loans, Reuters reported.

According to OLME, the union representing the teachers, about 10,000 part-time teachers could be dismissed once their temporary contracts expire. The union has called for a 24-hour strike when university exams start on May 17.

However, under Greek law the government has the right to forcibly mobilize workers in the event of a civil disorder, natural disaster or public health risk.

“This is a very authoritarian move from the government because it has issued civil mobilization orders for secondary education teachers in the public school system even before they decided to stage a strike during the university entry exams. Geek law is very explicit that civil mobilization refers to wars and natural disasters, not forms of civil protest,” Panagiotis Sotiris, sociology lecturer at the University of the Aegean, told RT.

“It’s really interesting to see that one of the legal experts, who has insisted for many years on the unconstitutionality of these emergency laws, is no other than the current Minister of Justice in the Greek government, Mr Antonis Roupakiotis,” he said.

thepeoplesrecord:

Malaysian people fight election fraud; face state repression from Singapore
May 13, 2013

Vowing to “never surrender”, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim called on Malaysians Wednesday to join in a nationwide protest tour against elections he said were stolen from the country’s people. He addressed a sea of supporters dressed in mourning black who filled a football stadium and spilled out into surrounding areas, swamping a suburb of the capital Kuala Lumpur in a gathering with a rock-concert atmosphere.

“We will go to every corner of this country,” Anwar declared, prompting roars from the crowd. “We will continue to struggle and we will never surrender!”

The huge turnout and Anwar’s call for similar rallies across the country upped the ante in a campaign by the opposition to paint the elections as a fraudulent victory for the regime that has ruled Malaysia for 56 years. Anwar had already vowed a “fierce” campaign against Sunday’s poll result and said he would soon produce evidence of fraud by what he calls an “illegitimate” Barisan Nasional (National Front) government headed by premier Najib Razak. “BN has robbed the rights of the people. We will prove that they have lied in 30 parliamentary seats,” he told the ecstatic, multi-racial crowd.

Najib’s government has hotly denied the opposition’s allegations of cheating. It had earlier denounced the gathering in the 25,000-seat stadium, which was filled to its seating capacity and had at least twice that many on the football pitch. Thousands more were outside. Najib’s office had issued a statement before the rally saying it was “calculated to create unrest”.

But the crowd was more festive than angry, roaring for a succession of opposition leaders and clean-election activists as rally-goers waved opposition party flags and sounded vuvuzela horns. “I think they should re-do the election,” said university student Tan Han Hui. “I’m here to support democracy. I feel the election is so unfair and there are so many dirty tricks.”

Previous election-reform protests have ended in wild scenes, with police using tear gas and water cannon. Police had earlier threatened to arrest participants at Wednesday’s rally but with tension high over the country’s closest-ever election result, they backed off and little security presence was seen.

Anwar has battled Barisan since he was ousted from its top ranks in 1998 and jailed for six years on sex and corruption charges widely seen as trumped-up. The opposition leader, who had urged Malaysians across the country to wear black in protest, called for another rally in his northern home state of Penang on Saturday, with more to follow around Malaysia. Among other allegations, voters complained that indelible ink — meant to thwart multiple voting — easily washed off. Accounts of suspected foreign “voters” being confronted by angry citizens at polling centers also went viral online.

Anwar had earlier alleged a government scheme to fly tens of thousands of “dubious” and possibly foreign voters to flood key constituencies.
A report released Wednesday by two independent watchdogs said the polls were marred by pro-government bias and irregularities that indicate “serious flaws” in the electoral system. The Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs and Centre for Public Policy Studies cited concerns including partisan use of government machinery, pro-government media bias and doubts over the integrity of voter rolls. The election was “only partially free and not fair”, the report said. In other words, the report found that the election was neither free nor fair.

The vote was touted as the first in which the opposition had a chance to unseat the ruling coalition, which has governed since independence in 1957. Barisan retained a firm parliamentary majority despite winning less than half the popular vote, a factor blamed on gerrymandering and Barisan tinkering with electoral districts, and adding to opposition supporters’ anger.

Both the United States and European Union congratulated Najib on his win but urged him to address reports of irregularities, while anti-graft watchdog Transparency International said the vote showed electoral reforms were “urgently required”.
Source

Malaysians in Singapore are facing political repression for demonstrating against the election results there. The protest here was illegal and those who knowingly organised and participated in such an illegal activity should face the consequences, said High Commissioner to Singapore Datuk Md Hussin Nayan. “I hope Malaysians working or studying in Singapore will reflect more on their situation before acting illegally,” he said. Md Hussin was responding to reports of the arrest of 21 Malaysians in the republic on Saturday, arrested for protesting in a ‘democracy’ and for not staying passive citizens at home.
Source

FBI officials remarked that yesterday’s shooting was “street violence” not an act of terror, but Ariella Cohen, a friend of Cotton’s and editor of Next American City, questioned why that distinction is even necessary. Wrote Cohen:

This distinction is troubling because it distinguishes between crime that is seen as against ‘all Americans’ from crime that is seen as a byproduct of an urban American sub-culture, a subculture that happens to have racial and class associations.

Local attorney Samantha Kennedy, who’s also a capital mitigation specialist who worked in Tucson and Aurora after their mass shootings, questioned if trauma services would be available to the New Orleans communities as they were offered in Arizona and Colorado. “We have a multigenerational multi-layered PTSD in this community,” wrote Kennedy on Facebook. “Violence begets violence because trauma begets trauma. We live in a highly traumatized community. When are we going to take the biopsyhochemical and emotional needs of our people seriously?”

Gov.

Hundreds of people danced the conga through the streets of Havana to the beats of drums and trumpets in a government-sponsored march against homophobia.

The dance on Saturday was led by President Raul Castro’s daughter, Mariela, who is the head of the National Sexual Education Center and a leading campaigner for gay rights in the country.

People danced La Rampa through the crowded city, chanting “Homophobia no! Socialism yes!” as they made their way through Havana for more than an hour.

Cuba has previously persecuted homosexuals, particularly during the 1960s when being gay was outlawed and homosexuals were interned in work camps.

Mariela Castro said she is optimistic that the communist nation will eventually legalise gay marriage.

“What is most complicated is the time it takes to overcome prejudices,” she said.

“We must change consciousness.”

Castro’s National Center of Sexual Education has campaigned to turn around Cuban attitudes about gays over the past seven years.

“I came to dance and to protest against homophobia,” said Farah Mariah, who claims to be the first person in Cuba to undergo a sex change and now calls herself the “Diva of the Transvestites.”

Government Makes Rainwater Illegal

Yep, RAIN WATER IS ILLEGAL.
As bizarre as it sounds, I guess it really shouldn’t be a surprise. We have covered numerous stories of how the government has been chipping away at the rights of land. From survival gardens being seized to the land owners in California who are being forced back on to the grid, people’s rights as land owners are being shredded by local, state and federal governments.
In the latest abuse of power, a man in Oregon has been sentenced to 30 days in jail and ordered to pay a $1,500 fine for collecting rainwater on his own land. Gary Harrington was convicted of nine misdemeanor crimes for filling his three man-made reservoirs with rainwater and snow runoff. The state of Oregon claims the water that fell from the sky, is owned by them and the Medford Water Commission.
As unreal as it may sound, at least 9 states have made it illegal to collect rainwater on your own land. Utah, Oregon, Colorado and a number of other states have passed rainwater laws that either limit or all out ban the collection of rainwater.

http://offgridsurvival.com/rainwaterillegal/

Fuck what the government says.now it owns rainwater ? Wow looking forward to the day of Reckoning for this one .

This reminds me of a similar situation back in Bolivia in 2000, and resulted in major riots and a mass movement to protest against the corporate ownership of water. When a private foreign company came to Bolivia, they seized control of local water sources and increased taxes that most Bolivians could not afford to pay, so then Bolivians built their own water wells to collect RAINWATER, which were then seized by the foreign corporation!

Read: the 2000 Cochabamba Protests / Water Wars of 2000

Nobody should stand by and allow this to happen… but the U.S media doesn’t care, they won’t talk about it, and people will remain clueless.

Holy shit

In the Middle East, the late King Hussein of Jordan received $7 million yearly from the Agency and a succession of Christian presidents of Lebanon and their parties benefited similarly. Nearly all the Generals who headed military style governments in Latin America in the 1970s and 1980s were on the CIA payroll. In Europe, the process was more subtle, with the money generally going to a political party or even a faction within a party rather than to a politician.”

-
CIA Pays the Potentate (via jayaprada)

Teenager Cameron D’Ambrosio faces up to 20 years in prison on “terror” charges for making reference to the Boston Marathon bombings in a Facebook post.

The prosecution of D’Ambrosio has all the hallmarks of a calculated test case, designed to roll back further the protections of the First Amendment and flex the state’s expanding power to regulate speech. It is designed to send a message that under the new legal framework imposed in the course of the so-called “war on terror,” people have to “watch what they say.”

D’Ambrosio, 18, attends Methuen High School in Massachusetts. He was arrested on May 2 on terror charges and accused of making a bomb threat. He is currently being held without bail. Police subsequently raided D’Ambrosio’s home, seizing an XBox 360 gaming system and a computer.

According to media reports, the teenager’s “bomb threat” consists of the following rap lyrics: “I’m not in reality, So when u see me f—- go insane and make the news, the paper, and the f—- federal house of horror known as the white house, Don’t f—- cry or be worried because all YOU people f—- caused this s—-.”

D’Ambrosio also posted: “F—- a boston bominb (sic) wait till u see the s—- I do, I’ma be famous rapping, and beat every murder charge that comes across me!”

Acquaintances of D’Ambrosio, who posts raps on Facebook under the alter-ego of “Cammy Dee,” expressed shock at the charges. Many felt that, in the hyperbolic braggadocio of the rap genre, D’Ambrosio was not threatening to unleash anything more than “famous rapping.”

On Facebook, one acquaintance wrote, “Knowing Cam, and I actually do, he definitely wouldn’t do any of the s—- he said,” adding that “his raps are influenced by many of the mainstream rappers on the radio today.”

It is no secret that confusion, frustration, anger, isolation, a certain fascination with violence—all these are fairly common among American teenagers at present. D’Ambrosio appears to be no exception. That these sentiments would find their way into a Facebook post is not, as the media claims, a shocking event.

Most importantly, regardless of the merit of D’Ambrosio’s Facebook postings, the postings themselves constitute 100 percent protected free speech. Historically, the US Supreme Court has held that the First Amendment to the US Constitution, part of the Bill of Rights, protects even so-called “terrorist” speech.

In a unanimous 1969 decision in Brandenburg v. Ohio, the US Supreme Court overturned the conviction of a KKK leader who openly called for violence against politicians in a speech. The KKK leader was convicted under an Ohio statute that made it a crime to “advocate … the duty, necessity, or propriety of crime, sabotage, violence or unlawful methods of terrorism as a means of accomplishing industrial or political reform.”

The Supreme Court struck down the conviction as well as the statute on the grounds that the statute “purports to punish mere advocacy” and “sweeps within its condemnation speech which our Constitution has immunized from governmental control.”

The “terror” allegations against D’Ambrosio are remarkable for what is not alleged. D’Ambrosio did not have any weapons or bombs. He did not have any plans to acquire weapons or bombs, and he did not attempt to acquire any. He did not have any accomplices and there was no conspiracy. There were no victims, real or intended. He did not threaten anyone in particular. He had no contact, affiliation, or membership in a terrorist group. There was no plan to carry out an attack in a particular place, or with a particular device, or on a particular date. All D’Ambrosio did was post the lyrics to a rap song on Facebook.

The authorities are making an effort to link D’Ambrosio’s Facebook post to the Boston bombings themselves. Methuen Police Chief Joseph Solomon held a press conference to announce the terror charges against D’Ambrosio, stating, “When we’re just recovering from what occurred in Boston, to make a threat and use what occurred in Boston to enhance your threat, is extremely alarming for us.”

D’Ambrosio’s prosecution is part of a string of similar “terror” prosecutions.

Teenager Abdella Ahmad Dounisi was arrested last year in Chicago for allegedly attempting to join a Syrian militant group that the US government claims is linked to Al Qaeda. While the US government is working hand-in-glove with similar groups in its drive for regime-change in Syria, the authorities are prosecuting Dounisi to establish that a person can be jailed merely for attempting online to join a group designated as “terrorist.”

Alex David Rosario, a Michigan high school student, was charged with “domestic terrorism” in January for allegedly threatening to shoot fellow Subway employees, which he claimed was a joke.

In February, two high school girls in Louisiana were arrested and charged with 10 counts of “terrorism” for emailing threats to students and faculty “to see if they could get away with it.”

These prosecutions mark a further step in the steady drive to transform the “war on terror” into a domestic war against opposition and dissent, which requires the dismantling of what remains of democratic legal protections and the demolition of the right to free speech as it was understood historically.

With the government free to designate individuals as “terrorists” merely because of what they say or post online, the way will be cleared for mass arrests and the unleashing of police state repression against the population.

The US government already asserts that a person designated as a “terrorist” by the president is subject to abduction and detention without trial (tested in the case of Jose Padilla and codified by the 2011 National Defense Authorization Act), trial before a military commission (pursuant to the Military Commissions Act), torture (tested in the case of Bradley Manning), or even assassination (tested in the cases of Anwar Al-Awlaki, Samir Khan, and Abdulrahman Al-Awlaki).

Under legal doctrines announced by the Bush and Obama administrations, a person who is designated as a “terrorist” can be denied all of his or her basic constitutional and legal rights. Moreover, under the Patroit Act of 2001, it is a crime to offer any kind of vaguely defined “material support” to any person designated as a “terrorist.” Lawyers who provide legal advice to individuals designated as “terrorists” may themselves be subject to arrest.

As the World Socialist Web Site has warned from the beginning, the so-called “war on terror” has nothing to do with protecting the American population from terrorism. Rather, it is a smokescreen for unbridled militarism abroad and the preparation of dictatorial forms of rule at home.

California farm workers fired for leaving fields during wildfire
May 8, 2013

More than a dozen farm workers in Southern California were out of a job after walking out of the fields last week, forced indoors because of heavy smoke from a massive wildfire burning nearby.

“Oh, yeah, the smoke was very bad. That’s no doubt about that,” said Lauro Barrajas, of the United Farm Workers.

As the blaze, dubbed the Springs Fire, continued to grow in Camarillo May 2, farm workers 11 miles south in Oxnard said they started to feel the effects of the smoke in the strawberry fields.

The ashes were falling on top of us, one of them explained, adding “it was hard to breathe.”

Air quality in the region was at dangerously poor levels and 15 workers at Crisalida Farms decided they could not handle it any longer. They left, even though their foreman warned them they would not have a job when they returned.

When they went back to the fields May 3, the farm fired them.

Barrajas, who is a representative of the UFW, said the workers contacted him for help, even though they were not members of the union.

Union representatives met with the farm’s upper management and applied a union rule.

“No worker shall work under conditions where they feel his life or health is in danger,” Barrajas said.

In a statement to Telemundo, the farm representative said the workers left without permission while orders still needed to be filled. The company offered to pay them for the hours they’d worked.

Later, the company settled with the union and offered to rehire all 15 workers. But only one worker returned.

The others took jobs on other farms.

One worker said while it hurts to lose work, one’s health is more important.

Fast food strike wave spreads to Detroit, St. Louis
May 10, 2013

St. Louis, and last month’s in New York and Chicago, today’s work stoppage is backed by a local coalition including the Service Employees International Union, and the participants are demanding a raise to $15 an hour and the chance to form a union without intimidation.

Organizers say that over a hundred workers joined the St. Louis strike between Wednesday and Thursday. That included a group of Jimmy John’s workers who alleged that management humiliated them by requiring them to hold up signs in public with messages including “I made 3 wrong sandwiches today” and “I was more than 13 seconds in the drive thru.”

“Sometimes I walk for more than an hour just to save my train fare so I can spend it on Ramen noodles,” St. Louis Chipotle worker Patrick Leeper said in an e-mailed statement Thursday. “I can’t even think about groceries.”

A spokesperson for Jimmy John’s declined to comment on Thursday’s strike; McDonald’s and Wendy’s did not respond to inquiries last night.

As I’ve written elsewhere, the fate of the fast food strike wave carries far-reaching implications: Fast food jobs are a growing portion of our economy, and fast food-like conditions are proliferating in other sectors as well. Organizers say the fast food industry now employs twice as many Detroit-area workers as the city’s iconic auto industry. These strikes also come at a moment of existential crisis for the labor movement, a sobering reality that was brought into sharp relief in December when Michigan, arguably the birthplace of modern US private sector unionism, became the country’s latest “Right to Work” state.

Along with a shared significant supporter—SEIU—the campaigns in New York, Chicago, St. Louis and Detroit have apparent strategies in common. Rather than waiting until they’ve built support from a majority of a store’s or company’s workers, they stage actions by a minority of the workforce designed to inspire their co-workers. Rather than publicly identifying the campaign and its organizers with a single international union, these union-funded efforts turn to allied community groups to spearhead organizing. Rather than training all their resources on a single company, they organize against all of the industry’s players at once. And—faced with legal and economic assaults that have weakened the strike weapon—these campaigns mount one-day work stoppages that are carefully tailored to maximize attention and minimize, but not eliminate, the risk that workers will lose their jobs.

Whether these strategies can ever compel a fast food giant to negotiate with its employees remains to be seen.

“After what I would consider well over three decades of wage suppression, workers in this particular industry—and then I think it’ll go to others—are realizing that their only way up the wage ladder is through their own organizations,” CUNY labor studies lecturer Ed Ott said Wednesday. Ott, a board member of the community organizing group that spearheaded the New York fast food strike, added, “The only way these workers are going to be able to advance these jobs is through unionization. And I think that idea has finally gotten traction.”

Update (9:15 AM Friday): According to the campaign, a walkout by twenty workers at Detroit’s 10400 Gratiot Avenue McDonald’s prevented the store from operating. Some workers brought in as strikebreakers to replace those striking workers chose to join the strike instead.

Organizers say that by day’s end, today’s strike could be the largest fast food work stoppage yet, topping last month’s 400-strong strike in New York.

Argentina JUST PASSED a groundbreaking gender identity bill!!!

From now on, people will be able to change the name and gender on their ID without needing psychiatric permission or any body modifications. Furthermore, anyone who does want hormones or surgery will be able to access them for free through the public and private health system.

It was passed unanimously today by the Senate

UNANIMOUSLY

Argentina is just getting more awesome by the year. Countries that aren’t Argentina need to take note.
